Getting started
What Euchre is, whether it is free, and how to start a match in your browser.
What is Euchre?
Euchre is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, played with a 24-card deck (9 through Ace in each suit). Each hand, a suit is chosen as trump through a bidding process, and the team that calls trump — the "makers" — must win at least 3 of the 5 tricks. The first team to 10 points wins the match.
Is Euchre free to play online?
Yes. playeuchre.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
Where does Euchre come from?
Euchre descends from the European game Écarté and the German game Juckerspiel, and became especially popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century — Euchre is even where the Joker card is believed to have originated, added as an extra trump in some variants. It remains a staple of family game nights, dorm rooms, and tournament leagues across the Midwest and beyond.
Rules and scoring
The deal, bidding for trump, the bowers, following suit, going alone, and how points are counted.
How do you play Euchre?
Deal 5 cards to each of the four players and turn the next card face up. Starting left of the dealer, each player may order up that card's suit as trump (the dealer picks it up and discards) or pass. If everyone passes, a second round lets any player call a different suit, with the dealer forced to name one if it comes all the way back around. The player left of the dealer leads the first trick; follow suit if you can, and the highest trump — or highest card of the suit led — wins each trick. Score the hand and deal again until a team reaches 10 points.
What is a bower in Euchre?
A bower is one of the two Jacks that become the top cards once trump is set. The right bower is the Jack of the trump suit itself — the single highest card in the hand. The left bower is the Jack of the other suit that shares trump's colour (spades with clubs, hearts with diamonds); it is promoted into the trump suit and ranks second highest, just below the right bower.
What does it mean to be "euchred"?
If the team that called trump wins fewer than 3 of the 5 tricks, they are "euchred" — the defending team scores 2 points instead of the makers scoring anything. It is the risk that keeps players from ordering up a weak hand just because they can.
What does "going alone" mean?
Whoever calls trump may choose to go alone, sitting their own partner out of the hand entirely. In exchange for playing a player short, sweeping all 5 tricks alone scores 4 points instead of the usual 2. It is a calculated risk for a hand strong enough to expect the sweep without help.
How does scoring work?
The maker's team scores 1 point for winning 3 or 4 of the 5 tricks, and 2 points for winning all 5 (4 points if they went alone). If the makers win fewer than 3 tricks, they are euchred and the defending team scores 2 points instead. The first team to 10 points wins the match.
What are the controls?
Tap or click a highlighted card in your hand to play it, and tap a suit button to call trump when it is your turn to bid. On the keyboard, N deals a new match and M toggles sound.
Why must the dealer sometimes name trump?
This build plays with "stick the dealer": if bidding comes all the way back around to the dealer in the second round with everyone else having passed, the dealer cannot pass — they must name a suit. It keeps every hand moving without an endless string of redeals.
Can a defending player go alone?
No — only the player who ordered up or called trump may choose to go alone. Their partner sits out; the two defenders always play the hand in full.
Winning and odds
When to order it up, when to pass, when to go alone, and how the computer opponents play.
How does the computer play?
Your partner and both opponents are computer players. They weigh real hand strength — the bowers, trump length, and off-suit aces — when deciding whether to order up, call trump, or go alone, and they try to win tricks as cheaply as possible or duck when a partner already has the trick won. No two hands play out quite the same way.
When should I order it up?
Count real trump strength before you commit: both bowers, a trump ace, or three-plus trump cards are the kind of hand worth making. A single bower and nothing else is usually a euchre waiting to happen — let it pass and see what round two offers.
When should I go alone?
Go alone when you hold enough trump and side-suit strength to expect all 5 tricks without help — typically both bowers plus another trump card and a guarded ace. Anything short of that, keep your partner in the hand; the extra player is worth more than the bigger payout.
Why did my win streak reset?
Your current streak counts consecutive matches won. Losing a match — the opponents reaching 10 points first — resets the current streak to zero. Your longest streak is kept as a separate best and is never erased by a loss.
Devices, saving, and accounts
Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and why a streak might reset.
Does the game save my progress?
Matches played and won, your current and longest win streak, euchres made and suffered, and lone hands won are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start.
Can I play Euchre on mobile?
Yes. The table is built for touch: tap a card to play it and tap a suit to call trump. All four seats, the trick in play, and the score fit on one portrait screen, and dealing a new match is instant with no page reload.
Can I play offline?
The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.
How do I reset my stats?
Open Stats from the game menu and use Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears matches played and won, streaks, euchres, and lone hands on this browser. It cannot be undone.
Still have a question?
Rules not listed here follow standard partnership Euchre with stick the dealer: bid for trump in two rounds, follow suit when you can, and take at least 3 of 5 tricks to score. For who publishes the game or a bug report, use About Us. Legal details are on Privacy and Terms.
