What is Euchre

The trump card game with the highest Jack in the room

Euchre is a 4-player, 2-team trick-taking game played with a 24-card deck. Each hand, the table bids for a trump suit — the Jack of that suit (the right bower) and the matching same-colour Jack (the left bower) become the two highest cards in play. The bidding team needs 3 of 5 tricks to score; fall short and you are euchred. First team to 10 points wins.

Order up, call, or go alone
Full bidding: order up the up-card in round one, call any suit in round two, and go alone for a bigger payout when your hand is strong enough.

How to play

How to play Euchre

Bid for trump, mind the bowers, follow suit, and take your tricks. A hand only takes a couple of minutes; the match runs to 10 points.

  1. 1

    Read the deal

Euchre is played with a 24-card deck — 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace in each suit. Each of the four players gets 5 cards; you sit South with a computer partner across from you at North, against two computer opponents at West and East. The next card from the deck is turned face up as the up-card.

  2. 2

    Bid for trump

Starting left of the dealer, each player may "order up" the up-card's suit as trump — the dealer then picks it up and discards a card. If everyone passes, the up-card is turned down and a second round lets any player call a different suit as trump. If it comes back around to the dealer with nobody having called, the dealer must name a suit — the deal never goes to waste.

  3. 3

Follow suit and play the bowers

The player left of the dealer leads the first trick; play passes clockwise. Follow the suit led if you can. The Jack of the trump suit — the right bower — is the single highest card in the game, and the same-colour Jack — the left bower — is the second highest, counting as trump even though it looks like the other suit. Highest trump played wins the trick, or the highest card of the suit led if no trump appears.

  4. 4

    Score the hand

The team that called trump — the "makers" — needs 3 of the 5 tricks to score a point, or 2 points for all 5. Fall short of 3 and you are "euchred": the defending team scores 2 points instead. A maker who goes alone (their partner sits out) and takes all 5 tricks scores 4. First team to 10 points wins the match.

Tips to win more hands

  • Order up early with two sure trump tricks and a side-suit ace — thin hands get euchred.
  • As dealer, weigh what you would discard before you pick up: a hand with three side suits and only two trump is rarely worth it.
  • Holding both bowers and an off-suit ace is usually strong enough to go alone.
  • Leading trump early drains your opponents' trump and clears the way for your side-suit aces later.
  • On defense, lead through the caller — play toward the hand that had to declare its strength, not away from it.
  • Void a short suit early while you still control the timing, so a late trump can ruff in when it matters.
  • Watch the discard when the dealer picks up the up-card — it is one more piece of information about what they were willing to give up.

FAQ

Euchre, answered

Straight answers about the free Euchre card game you can play online in your browser.

What is Euchre?

Euchre is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, played with a 24-card deck (9 through Ace in each suit). Each hand, a suit is chosen as trump through a bidding process, and the team that calls trump — the "makers" — must win at least 3 of the 5 tricks. The first team to 10 points wins the match.

How do you play Euchre?

Deal 5 cards to each of the four players and turn the next card face up. Starting left of the dealer, each player may order up that card's suit as trump (the dealer picks it up and discards) or pass. If everyone passes, a second round lets any player call a different suit, with the dealer forced to name one if it comes all the way back around. The player left of the dealer leads the first trick; follow suit if you can, and the highest trump — or highest card of the suit led — wins each trick. Score the hand and deal again until a team reaches 10 points.

Is Euchre free to play online?

Yes. playeuchre.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

What is a bower in Euchre?

A bower is one of the two Jacks that become the top cards once trump is set. The right bower is the Jack of the trump suit itself — the single highest card in the hand. The left bower is the Jack of the other suit that shares trump's colour (spades with clubs, hearts with diamonds); it is promoted into the trump suit and ranks second highest, just below the right bower.

What does it mean to be "euchred"?

If the team that called trump wins fewer than 3 of the 5 tricks, they are "euchred" — the defending team scores 2 points instead of the makers scoring anything. It is the risk that keeps players from ordering up a weak hand just because they can.

What does "going alone" mean?

Whoever calls trump may choose to go alone, sitting their own partner out of the hand entirely. In exchange for playing a player short, sweeping all 5 tricks alone scores 4 points instead of the usual 2. It is a calculated risk for a hand strong enough to expect the sweep without help.

How does scoring work?

The maker's team scores 1 point for winning 3 or 4 of the 5 tricks, and 2 points for winning all 5 (4 points if they went alone). If the makers win fewer than 3 tricks, they are euchred and the defending team scores 2 points instead. The first team to 10 points wins the match.

How does the computer play?

Your partner and both opponents are computer players. They weigh real hand strength — the bowers, trump length, and off-suit aces — when deciding whether to order up, call trump, or go alone, and they try to win tricks as cheaply as possible or duck when a partner already has the trick won. No two hands play out quite the same way.

Does the game save my progress?

Matches played and won, your current and longest win streak, euchres made and suffered, and lone hands won are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start.

Can I play Euchre on mobile?

Yes. The table is built for touch: tap a card to play it and tap a suit to call trump. All four seats, the trick in play, and the score fit on one portrait screen, and dealing a new match is instant with no page reload.
